Kiss the Son (Psalm 2:9-12)
Intro: Is God the "Lord and Ruler of Nations?"
National Thanksgiving by George Washington (1789); National Day of Prayer by Abraham Lincoln (1863).

Exposition: What does God require of heathen nations?

  1. Not to set themselves against the Lord and his Christ (v2)

  2. Not to rage and conspire together vainly to "break their bands and cast away their cords" (v1,3)

  3. To be wise and to be instructed by God's word (v10, see v6)

  4. To serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling (v11)
But what does this mean, specifically?

(a) To glorify God.
Belshazzar in Dan 5:18-23, Herod in Acts 12:22-23

(b) To depart from idolatry.
Egypt, Is 19:1, cf Rev 16:9

(c) To exhort their nation to faith and repentance.
King Darius (Dan 6:25-26), Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 3:29-30), and Jonah (Jonah 3:4-10)

(d) To be righteous and show mercy to the poor
Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 4:24), see Rom 13:3-4

(e) To give gifts to the Lord
Compare negatively to Saul (1Sam 10:27). See Ps 72:10-11, 1Ki 10:2,10, Isa 60:3, 5-6, 9, Mt 9:11

(f) To Nurture and serve God's holy people
Ezra 1:1-4, 7:12-27, Is 49: 22-23, 60:11-12, 16

(g) To swear their allegiance to him (national covenanting)
Egypt (Is 19:18)

  1. To kiss the Son lest he become angry (v12)
    See 1Sam 10:1, Jn 5:22-23.

  2. To put their trust in Christ (v12)

Why should they do this?

  1. If they don't they will broken in pieces and the rulers perish in the way (v9,12)
    Cf Dan 5:24-28, Ez 28:2-8, Amos 1

  2. If they do, all who put their trust in Him will be blessed (v12b)
    Jer 18:7-10
