Major section of John's Gospel is Chapters 2-12 = Book of Signs, Jesus Public Ministry. A subsection of this section is Chapters 2-4 where Jesus fulfills the Old Testament laws/ceremonies.
The setting is Cana of Galilee on a day (the third day from what preceeded) of a week at the beginning of Jesus public ministry. Two possible interpretations of Jesus' interchange with his mother are considered.
An Old Testament prophesey that finds fulfillment in this wedding is Amos 9:13-14. Also, Jesus manifests his glory and the disciples believed in Him.
