How could Peter's confession be followed so quickly by a harsh rebuke of Jesus? Jesus had to teach the disciples the ramifications of His being the Christ. He rebuked Peter for reiterating the temptation of Satan to skip the suffering. Their perceptions of the Christ and the consequences of following the Christ both begin here in Mark 8.
