WSC #5 The Living & True God

Q. Are there more Gods than one? A. There is but One only, the living and true God.

Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 4:39, 6:4, Isaiah 44:6, Jeremiah 10:10, 1 Corinthians 8:4-6, 1 Thessalonians 1:9, 1 John 5:20-21
I. One God
a. Monotheism & the 2 kinds of atheism. “Hence, are we (Christians) called atheists. And we confess that we are atheists, so far as gods of this sort are concerned, but not with respect to the most true God, the Father of righteousness and temperance and the other virtues, who is free from impurity.” Justin Martyr, The First Apology of Justin before Caesar
b. Every human knows that there is “One God.” (Romans 1:18)
i. Creation
ii. Conscience
c. Evolution or degradation of religion? Romans 1:21-23
II. The Living God
a. The “Living God” compared to “dead” idols.
b. Earthly, human religion is based upon rituals or rationalism, not on a relationship.
c. Idols are dead. Idolatry is antithetical to the worship of a living God!
III. The True God
a. The “True God” compared to “false” idols.
b. The LORD is true: He is not like us. False gods & idols are made like sinful man

Conclusion: The One, Living & true God emphasizes that He is the “first & the last”
