A careful reading of the gospels reveals that Jesus openly identified Himself as the Christ....and at the same time apprises His disciples of His impending death.

The pathway of Christ's ministry.....was a pathway resolutely trodden towards the cross.....

......and while the consciousness of its pain was ever before Him.....ever weighing upon His mind...His heart....His soul........

......so also the sense of its value was ever before Him.

There is no subject more mysterious or more sacred in all of Scripture than the sufferings of Christ upon the cross.

WE WILL APPROACH OUR STUDY BY MEANS OF TWO VITAL QUESTIONS.......

  1. How can God be just and justify the sinner?

  2. How can a guilty sinner be made righteous in his standing before God and in his conduct?

THESE QUESTIONS FIND THEIR ANSWER ONLY IN THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST.

As we stand at the foot of the cross.....all we have that will help us to understand something of the significance of His sufferings are His own words....which have been recorded in the Scriptures.

The first three give us keen insight into His pity for men....His power toward those who trust Him....and the provision He makes for those upon whom He has set His love.

Listen to these first three sayings.....as they have been recorded in the word of God.

(1) “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”

(2) “Today, shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

(3) John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the
