Daily Bible Reading Summary and Application

MATTHEW 7
Summary: Christ warns about a rash and judgemental attitude toward others without personal examination (1-5). Then warns against sharing God's Word with reckless and aggressive people, using the illustration of dogs (6). Gives encouragements to prayer, and the assurance of answer from God (7-11). Christ compares the way of salvation to a way that is strait, or confined and narrow, but the normal and common way of life to a broad and wide road leading to eternal destruction (12-14). Then He gives a warning against false prophets and teachers, and that they are known by their fruits (15-20). He says that no gifts or miracles will finally save those who live a life of hypocrisy and sin. But using the illustration of building life on rock or sand, He teaches that those who do what Christ says, and not merely hearers will be saved.

Devotional: (1) What kind of judging Jesus is warning against? (2) Do you generally have a critical spirit toward others around you? Will you spend time thinking about this and to resolve before God to correct your own faults first, and then humbly correct others when necessary? (3) How is your prayer life? Do you pray regularly by yourself, with your family, and go to the weekly church prayer meetings with joy, humility and expectation that God will hear you? (4) Who are you spending more time and effort listening to? To you heart and feelings, to the worldly teachers, or to the Word of God? (5) What is your attitude and fruit of yielding to and following the Word of God?
