Wanted: A King Like All the Nations

Why did Israel demand a king like the other nations? What was the true nature of their request? How did God answer them according to their wishes and still maintain His absolute sovereignty over them and their ways? What do requirements required by the king teach us of being subject to any king but Christ? How is their request and desire typical of those who will not have Christ to reign over them?
