Prayerfully Work for Christ's Return

136

Supposedly Martin Luther when asked what he would do if the world would end tomorrow responded by saying that he would plant a tree today. Some doubt whether he really ever said this, but I think with our postmillennial vision, we would agree with the sentiment. Rightfully we reject the mentality behind the statement, “You don't polish brass on a sinking ship.” As a church we confess that the final return of Jesus may well be still a thousand years or more ahead of us, based on our understanding of what Scripture teaches about God's work here on earth. But this understanding should not cause us to lose sight of the return of Christ. All our work must done in terms of His final return. This is still always our ultimate hope and comfort. Though we do expect to see progress and gain in the long term, our hope still must be directed in terms of the return of Christ and the ultimate completion of God's Work which began on the first day of creation. Christ's Return is not just a future event but also a present hope and prayer. And praying for the Lord's Return is not a cry of defeat but rather a prayer for victory and the furtherance of Christ's kingdom. Prayerfully work for the Lord's Return.
This morning we will look at 2 Peter 3:10-13 in two parts. First, from verse 10, the Day of the Lord. Second, from verses 11-13, our response to the Day of the Lord.
