God has to show us how futile the path of self is before He ever gets us on the path of righteousness.
God gave the law to reveal His righteousness, His holiness that, in the light of the law, we would see our sinfulness. The person of righteousness is Jesus Christ. The path is to Christ, through Christ and Christ through us.
