One Thing is Necessary: Christ

In Luke 10:25-42 we read of two familiar events, with a popular parable between them: a lawyer tests Jesus about the law, followed by the parable of 'The Good Samaritan', and we are then taken to the home of Martha and Mary where Jesus is called upon to settle once and for all what may well be a lifetime of sibling rivalry. In both events, Jesus is asked a question regarding things that matter most to the person asking. On both occasions Jesus responds by telling the questioner what is truly necessary - to love, and to hear the Word of the Lord.

Could life really be so simple? The answer is both 'yes' and 'no'. There is much in these days which distracts us from what is truly necessary. Our own guilt and consciences, the many and varied tasks and responsibilities we face each day, together with the constant noise and myriad of voices in the world all call for our attention. At times we can be overwhelmed with it all, driving us to distraction. It is in the midst of all this that Christ comes to us, sometimes with a firm but gentle rebuke, reminding us that only 'one thing is necessary'. He alone is our hope for peace and rest. He alone has loved without seeking to justify himself. He alone has served without distraction. And it is his voice alone we should listen to, for he speaks only what the Father has told him.

May we be granted ears to hear, and so listen. And may the Father speak to us by his Son, and show us the deep, holy love he has loved us with in Christ, that we too might love and serve without fear or distraction.
