The Tenth Commandment - The Sanctity of the Heart

94

The moral law of God is an expression of the moral character of God's Being. This series seeks to expound what we know of that law from the Bible and what its requirements are for the Christian believer in his understanding of Truth, and in his conduct. Rightly understanding the moral law is foundational for many Christian truths. We now are in the Decalogue itself. We have already examined the first nine commandments. Today we conclude this series on the Ten Commandments with Part 2 of the Tenth Commandment, the Sanctity of the Heart. As with all of the commandments of God, this commandment must be understood in its deep spiritual significance as to what it requires as well as what it forbids. While expressed in terms of coveting what belongs to one's neighbor, this commandment must be understood in the light of the supremacy of God‘s being. We are commanded to honor that attribute of God by not allowing our hearts to crave that which does not rightfully belong to us. The Bible likens coveting to idolatry, or the elevation of things to a level of worship. We are to be content with that which God has blessed us
