Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness
568
Most commentators misunderstanding what the Lord Jesus is saying in Luke 16:9 because they fail to grasp the sarcasm. If we read Luke 16:9 in the context of the whole chapter, as well as what the Lord teaches about money elsewhere in Scripture, we will realize that Jesus is warning us against using mammon to win friends.
The call of the gospel is a call to give up everything for Christ. However, once we come to grips with the radical nature of that call, we are left undone because we are convicted that none of us lives up to that call even after decades of walking with Him. It is only then that we can truly appropriate the gospel offer, and offer that is rooted in Christ alone, based on grace alone and received by faith alone.
