John the Baptist did not know who Jesus was. He looked like any other man—no white robe or halo. Christ's baptism is how He was manifest or made known. Water baptism is the public manifestation of Christ's presence—here, physically; in the believer also. Baptism is a public, visible declaration of something you can't see—salvation.
