The Saint's Hiding Place in the Evil Day Part 1

565

Times of trouble will inevitably come to every believer. Jesus promised that his disciples would suffer tribulation, but also that they would find abiding peace in him who has overcome the world (John 16:33). Elsewhere Sibbes has said, "As the winter prepares the earth for spring, so also do sanctified afflictions prepare the soul for glory." Richard Sibbes was a humble man who lived his life in moderation. He had a peaceful spirit and was universally well-liked. As he adorned the gospel alluringly in his ministry, so he was a popular preacher. He held a lectureship at Holy Trinity, Cambridge; preached at Gray's Inn, London; and was Master of St. Catherine's Hall, Cambridge. The following text issues from two sermons of the same name which are taken from the first volume of The Complete Works of Richard Sibbes. "Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to him in well-doing, as to a faithful Creator." 1 Peter 4:19
