The comparisons between the births of Isaac and of Jesus Christ are remarkable. Despite the sweetness and joyfulness of the birth of Isaac, we are told: "Abraham was very grievous" (Gen 21:11). We only understand Abraham by getting at least a glimpse of his many trials. Nevertheless, the chapter concludes with Abraham worshiping God.
