Did Nicodemus really come to Christ at night to learn about Jesus' teachings or did he come to co-opt this powerful teacher to his own philosophy which Christ directly identified as worthy only of death, not life. As a "teacher of Israel" this must have been a tremendous blow to Nicodemus' prestige.
