I remember the first time a doctor checked my reflexes. I laughed when the funny-hammer-thing tapped me below the knee and I kicked him! The harder he tapped, the greater the reflex. Love for others is the reflex of God’s saving love toward us. How hard have you been struck by the love of God for you? Intimate friendship with Jesus turned a hot-tempered fisherman into John, the apostle of love. Toward the end of his life, the aged apostle reminds believers that sincere love for one another is a sure sign of friendship with Jesus: “He who loves his brother abides in the light...” 1 John 2:10 (NKJV) Conversely, to abide in darkness is to live a life governed by self-love... sin’s distortion of the love of God.
