The Era of the Great Protestant Confessions, Part 1
Series The Protestant Reformation
In our last two sessions we studied the lives of 3 different men who lived at 3 different times in 3 different countries, and yet who are inseparably linked by the same gospel: John Wycliffe, John Huss, and Martin Luther. In this session we are introduced to 3 confessions of faith that were published in the 17th century by 3 very different Christian groups: Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists. And while their 3 confessions (The Westminster Confession, the Savoy Declaration, and the Baptist Confession of 1689) all vary at different points, they are marked by their unanimity concerning Christ's crown, Covenant theology, and Calvinism. But what were the circumstances that brought these great confessions into existence? We explore this question in this first of two lectures.
