Jesus' Appearance on the Emmaus Road

John didn't record this episode, but Luke made it the centerpiece of his treatment of Jesus' post-resurrection appearances. It is especially important in that it highlights the truth that all of the Old Testament Scripture reveals Jesus the Messiah - not by a handful of scattered proof-texts, but organically through the structure and progress of the biblical storyline. Though Jesus' disciples embraced Him as Israel's Messiah, they really didn't know Him because they didn't understand the Scriptures that testify of Him. It was by opening their eyes to the Scriptures that Jesus opened their eyes to recognize Him.
