What does this seemingly ubiquitous verse proclaim?
Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
You would be hard-pressed to find someone who does not have this verse memorized; for many people, it is their one and only quotable verse.
Reaping What You Sow
It is important to note that those who judge according to scriptural guidelines have nothing to fear. Look at the general nature of what the Bible says about scripturally judging.
Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
Plainly stated, you will reap what you sow. The context of the passage shows that those who judge righteously have nothing to fear from being judged based upon biblical standards. The only person who has reason to fear being judged by their own “measure” would be those judging hypocritically as further described in the verses that follow.
Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Judging Righteously
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
This passage again explicitly instructs Christians to judge and how to judge.
