The Sermon on the Mount: Spiritual Meekness
Matthew 5:5

Introduction and Review: The main theme of the Sermon on the Mount is the Kingdom of Heaven; the Beatitudes describe the character of its citizens. The order of the Beatitudes is significant.

Note: Consider how contrary the teaching of Jesus is to the ways of the world…

  1. The world views meekness as a flaw…
  2. Jesus is “meek and lowly…” Matthew 11:29
  3. Meekness is a necessary spiritual trait of every true citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven…
    Psalm 37 contrasts the “wicked” with the “meek.”
    “The meek shall inherit the earth…” and faith gets it!

Lesson: True meekness is not natural but the fruit of the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life…
