The Lord's Supper, A Means of Grace

21

In all of the controversy about the Lord's Supper due to errors such as Transubstantiation, we can sometimes forget the positive aspects of the Supper. We see how the Reformed Confessions make the point that although Christ is not physically present with us in the Supper, He is spiritually present. Christ often uses the language of metaphors, to show us how great and good He is as our Master and Lord. There must therefore be the reality of a spiritual union between the believer and Christ in order to have life and grace from Him. It is only with Christ that our heart can be circumcised and only in Him that all of our trespasses can be forgiven, and we be resurrected spiritually. All of this is very vital to understanding the Lord's Supper. It is the will of the Triune God for every believer to be justified and continually sanctified and finally to be glorified. The Lord's Supper is one of the means by which God builds our faith; gives strength to us by the Holy Spirit so that we might continually grow in our faith. It is a means of grace to bring our spiritual trength back to us, time and again, to nourish us spiritually, so that we might live our lives to Him.
