Doing a Great Work

169

The persistence and opposition of his enemies did not prevent Nehemiah from continuing the great work in which he was engaged, that of re-building and making secure, the city of Jerusalem, and ensuring that God was truly obeyed and honoured amongst the remnant that had returned from captivity in Babylon.

The Lord Jesus Christ also, said, "I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." He loved His people, and he, like Nehemiah, came seeking the good of Zion.

What makes the work of Christ a 'great work'? It may be said that it touches on eternal matters that are most important. The things of this life, our bodies, our possessions, will eventually decay, but the soul goes on. Either eternity in heaven or hell await us all, and caring for souls is surely the greatest work of all! Labouring to ensure all hear the gospel is truly a great work, and one in which all true believers should be engaged.

The work of Christ is a great work because it has a life-changing effect. A great change takes place at conversion, a great transformation indeed.

Our daily living, family life, Christian work and witness should be Christ-centred, with the evidence of us knowing that we value Christ's great work on our behalf as we persevere, not giving up, despite any disappointments or discouragements. In such times we must cry unto God that He may come to our aid.
