Our Great High Priest

113

Jesus came to be the Mediator between God and mankind. What does a mediator do? He brings estranged people together. A mediator is needed only when there is a dispute between two parties.

That is exactly what Jesus' role is in His mediatorial work as the Savior of the world. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2, immediately after identifying "the man Christ Jesus" as the one and only Mediator between God and people! Paul goes on to add, "who gave himself as a ransom for all" (6a). That explains how Jesus has accomplished His work as the Mediator f His people.

We all need mediation with God!
Yes, all mankind has turned away from God and every one of us has fallen into sin. We do not live the way that we are obligated to live by the righteous decree fro your Creator. Our sin has separated us from God. It has created enmity between Him and us. We need to be reconciled. We need a Mediator.

Jesus Christ is that "one Mediator between God and men." He accomplishes His work of mediation by fulfilling 3 offices in our behalf. He does the work of a Prophet, a Priest, and a King.

• As a Prophet He dispels our ignorance by teaching us the truth about God, ourselves and the way of salvation.
• As a Priest He intercedes for His people with God and makes atonement for our sin.
• As King He rules over us and protects His people from all of our enemies.

Today, I want to consider with you the 2nd of those mediatorial offices by looking at the priestly work of Christ for His people.

Our text is Hebrews 4:14-16.
