Writing to Christians at Rome whom he hoped soon to visit, Paul's primary theme in the epistle is the basic gospel, God's plan of salvation and righteousness for all humankind, Jew and Gentile alike. He presents to them his convictions concerning the faith: the universality of sin; the impotence of the law as a means of salvation; the nature of God's saving act in Christ, and its appropriation by faith.
