The Nature Of Impenitence

As Jesus again enters the Temple area to teach and to heal, He is confronted by the priests and elders of the people, demanding to know on what authority He does these things — as if His miracles and teaching were not sufficient proofs already! Jesus takes the opportunity to point out one more proof of His authority: John the Baptist. By publicly cornering the priests with their waffling on John's ministry, and on their refusal to believe John, Jesus shows the people the real nature of the priests' opposition. It wasn't a matter of opinions, or of differing ideas. The priests were openly shown as frauds, pretenders, and empty shells. So all who will try to appear to be good while being friends of sin will find that God's Word will reveal their true nature every time.
