'What Is His Name?

198

“What is His Name?”
Isaiah 9:1-7
Isaiah's ministry endured at least four kings and lasted for 40 to 60 years. He ministered in a very dark time for the nation. One of the signatures of Isaiah's writing was strong judgment on one hand and future restoration and hope on the other.
Chapter 9 is one of those future hope segments. Darkness will turn to light with the coming of the Messiah.
Isaiah's name means “the salvation of Jehovah.”
Consider the Messiah's Nature (v. 6)
“Child” - humanity
“Son” - diety
“The government will rest on His shoulders.”
A literal government, the one thousand year reign of Christ.
A personal governing of our lives.
Consider the Messiah's Names (v. 6)
“Wonderful Counselor”
The two names together could mean a miraculous distinct advisor.
Distinct from:
The wicked, Psalm 1, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked.”
Fools, Proverbs 18:2, “A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind.”
Manipulators
Inadequate
Distinct how?
Direction, John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life…”
Clarity, John 8:12, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Cares, John 10:11, “I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep.”
Satisfies, John 6, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who
believes in me shall never thirst.”
