Smyrna suffered persecution because 1) Christ loved them and 2) Christ was maturing them because He loved them. He was admonishing them to not lose their first love as Ephesus had done to avoid persecution. Their reward is the same reward for ALL who are saved in Christ: Eternal life avoiding the Second Death.
