Shepherds in the Book of Zechariah

166

I. The Shepherd Smitten, but a Remnant Spared 13:7-9
We have NT warrant to see the fulfillment of these verses. Matthew 26:31; 54-56

II. The Lord is my Shepherd – Psalm 23

III. Christ as a Shepherd in Jeremiah Jeremiah 23:1-6

IV. Christ as a Shepherd in Ezekiel -- Ezekiel 34

V. Christ, the Good Shepherd John 10:1-18; 25-30

A. The Good Shepherd 10:1-18

B. Thieves and Robbers
The same problem existed in Zechariah's day -- Zechariah 10:2; 11:17

C. The Sheep (God's People)

    1. They listen to their shepherds voice, but will not heed the voice of strangers.
    2. They follow the shepherd, but run away from strangers.
    3. They enter by the door (true faith in Jesus Christ and His righteousness).
    4. They are saved, safe, and secure.
They go in and out and find pasture.
They have abundant life because of the shepherd.
    5. They may not all belong to the same fold, but they will all become one flock with one shepherd -- Jesus! (v. 16)

D. Jesus Applies the Principle that He is the Good Shepherd 25-30

    1. The Desperate State of the Lost
    2. Grace – the unmerited favor of God
    3. An Effective Call
    4. Preservation of the Saints
        1) They are Christ's sheep.
        2) They follow Christ.
        3) The sheep are given ETERNAL life.
        4) This life is GIVEN to them.
        5) The Lord Himself declares that they shall NEVER perish.
        6) No one can pluck them from the Shepherd's hand.
        7) Above Christ and the sheep is the Father's hand.
