Avenger Of His People

Drama, gossip, persecution, shattered ‘friendships’. Many of us have experienced the pain of being betrayed by those we thought of as friends. They were friends, it turns out, when it was advantageous to them, when we were a benefit to them. Let the situation change, fortunes turn and these ‘friends’ turn quickly and become the ones who gossip about us, harm our reputations and see k to do us damage in order to build themselves up with persons that they now are allied with for their benefit. (Sometimes it seems middle and high school never ends, people just become a little more sophisticated in how they betray and harm their ‘friends’.) Been there, had that done to you? Most of us have. David, the writer of Psalm 35, cries out from that very situation. Those who have loved him, built him up have now turned. He is the butt of their jokes, the source of their sordid stories and the intended recipient of their stabbing daggers. Through Psalm 35, we can relate to David’s experiences and the Holy Spirit, via David, teaches us how to pray for true justice and God’s glory in such a painful place.
