Christ the King!

The great anticipation of the old covenant was the coming of the Messiah King who would rule the Kingdom of God in righteousness and peace.

Herein we look at the Davidic covenant in 2 Samuel 7 to get a better understanding of the longing that the Jews were undergoing as they were waiting for Messiah to rid them of their enemies.

The psalmist delights in God's committed and unfailing love for His covenant people, and looks forward with faith to the promises made to Abraham, Moses, and David to come true.

Here we see that all of Israel's representative heads have failed to bring about God's promise made to Eve in Genesis 3:15.

All the forerunners of Christ failed to 'deliver the goods' because of one crucal problem: they were sinners.

And so the breaking forth of the sinless God-man, Jesus Christ, into the world is indeed the great news that God's elect people have been yearning for. Indeed, Jesus is the 'Yes' and 'Amen' to all of God's promises to His people.

This is the true background to the Christmas story, and helps us to appreciate more the steadfast and loyal love of our Sovereign God to save a people unto the praise of His glorious grace!
