Paul in Athens

Paul had various missionary strategies

Ecc 11.1 Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

In Acts 17 we find that Paul has travelled to Athens.

Amongst the wonders of this ancient city Paul is grieved because everywhere he looks he sees a city trapped in Idolatry.

Idolatry is a great sin because it breaks the Greatest Commandment.

Paul knew that the Gospel could defeat the idols of his day.

1. The Synagogues first: V17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews

2. The Gentile Worshippers:

3. The Market Place: The Church must be in the Marketplace today.

Paul reasoned with the Jews, but he just didn’t stick with the Jews. He talked with the God seeking Gentiles and he went out to the Marketplace to talk with anyone. He was a great evangelist.

Athens was the Cultural and intellectual, centre of the Ancient World.

It is estimated that the City of Athens in Paul’s day had roughly 30,000 gods or idols that were worshipped.

Amidst all the idolatry Paul came with the powerful message of the Gospel.

Acts 17.18… He preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.
