Viewpoint Violations

202

During the first segment of the program today, I will speak with Leigh Jones - editor of the WORLD on Campus website - about a couple of recent stories related to free speech on college campuses.

The first story is out of Buffalo NY. There Members of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo will have to wait until after Christmas to find out whether they can continue to operate as an official student group on campus.

At issues was the group's former treasurer who "left his position when InterVarsity's student leadership team found out he was gay. Sophomore Steven Jackson claims he was pressured to resign because of his sexual orientation. InterVarsity leaders maintain Jackson's actions - participating in a sexual relationship outside marriage - violated the group's constitution, which requires its leaders to sign a commitment of faith and lifestyle pledge".

In a related case, "The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments yesterday in a religious liberty case that could determine whether a college has the right to require students to profess certain beliefs in order to get a degree.

Augusta State University, in east Georgia, put counseling student Jennifer Keeton on academic probation in 2010 after she acknowledged in private conversations and during class that she disagreed with homosexuality."
