• When God wants you to know the meaning of an archaic word, He provides the meaning.
1 Samuel 9:9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
• The Bible self-interprets and is not to be subject to any private interpretation.
2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
• Going to the Bible with preconceived notions is one of the biggest hindrances to learning the truth. People tend to explain away what they perceive flaws in their dogmatic assertions. There is no private interpretation, no contradiction in scripture and much less "exceptions to the rule" than claimed.
Notice how the Bible offers a second witness to the interpretation of Rabbi as Master.
Matthew 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
