The Gift of Peace

Christ often comforts his people with peace. Sometimes He gives us peace before the storm in order to prepare us for it. Sometimes He gives us a reprieve in the middle of the storm. Sometimes He sees us through the storm to the peace on the other side.

Thomas Watson writes of an external peace that shows up in three places; economic, political and ecclesiastical. And of internal peace or spiritual peace; peace with God and peace within us.

1. Jesus promises peace for our souls. How can this peace be ours? What is the source of this peace?
2. Not only does Jesus leave peace behind through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, but He also says, "My peace I give to you." Peace is the product of his presence and a product of grace. Christ is the source of peace.
3. Christ's peace is unique. It provides something the world can't offer.
4. How can we be sure that the peace we feel is true peace and not a counterfeit? Jesus says, "Let not your hearts be troubled." In the midst of devastation and turmoil, how do you react and where do you go for peace? What happens when your heart is troubled? If your peace is independent of life's situations, then it your peace will be dependent on Christ and what he has done.
   Conclusion: There is a lifestyle that leads to peace. It is godliness, Christ-likeness. Fundamental to that lifestyle is faith. We believe that God is in control; that God works out all things for the good of His people; and that God means what He says.
