John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

  1. By public proclamation (John 1:35-39)
    • John preached Jesus and pointed to Him (John 1:35-36).
    • Two of John's disciples followed Jesus (John 1:37).
    (1) Andrew
    (2) The second unnamed disciple is likely the Apostle John

• Jesus asked them: What seek ye? (John 1:38); NOTE: Jesus always directed attention to the heart of any situation. He asked them their purpose in following Him.
a. The men replied (John 1:38).
(1) They called Him Rabbi.
a) Rabbi means Master or Teacher (John 3:2)
b) John defines words like this for his audience which shows that his audience would likely include Gentiles who would not naturally know the definition.
(2) They asked: Where dwellest thou?
a) They wanted to be able to find Him again.
b) They wanted to know how He lived.
b. Jesus replied (John 1:39).
(1) Come and see.
(2) They abode with Him that day.
a) It was about the tenth hour—Roman time (10AM) or Jewish time (4PM). It was probably Roman time.
i) Roman time is used in John 19:14.
ii) If it had been 4PM, they would have stayed with Him that night.

  1. By personal invitation (John 1:40-42)

  2. By providential intervention (John 1:43-44)
John 1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
    g. Jesus goes into Galilee and finds Philip. He is specifically sought out by the Lord. (John 1:43)
    h. Jesus gives Philip a specific call to follow Him (John 1:43). This can be compared to the conversion of the Apostle Paul.

  3. By patient instruction (John 1:45-51)

  4. By providential intervention (John 1:43-44)
