The next day dawned, but the Pilgrims did not realize it had. The new dawn came but brought no respite from
the violence of the storm. In their dismal coop, the Pilgrims gradually awoke, not appreciating that it was day. One by one they grasped that they were still to be confined to the blackness of the hold below — maybe for a long time to come. Their trouble was not yet over.
Justice spoke with trembling voice to his sister. 'How do you feel?' he managed to say.
'Awful,' she replied. It's hard to breathe . . . my head aches. My stomach hurts. The smell is horrible. Oh for air! . . . oh for air to breathe.'
