Atheist couldn't have been more amused. Christian and Hopeful actually believed that there was such a place as the Celestial City. He had such a good laugh; they were so sincere. He was so sure that the whole Christian idea was nothing more than a naive notion that he had actually turned his back on the Celestial City and begun walking back toward the town from which he had come.

He tried to help Christian and Hopeful to understand that there really is nothing in this world that is certain except for the things a person can detect with his five senses. Heaven and Hell are outdated whims.

Christian and Hopeful are pressed to respond to Atheist. How could they help him? How do you respond to the gesting ideas of atheism?
