John Bunyan, in his treatise Christian Behavior identifies 3 basic sins that are common to professing Christian believers: (1) Lust, or Covetousness; (2) Pride; & (3) Adultery, or Uncleaness, or Impurity. Why wouldn't these be the three basic sins? These were the 1st ones found in the Garden of Eden among those created perfectly, Adam and Eve.

Lust= "I want more than God."
Pride= "I know better than God."
Adultery= "I will worship something other than God."

Eve (Gen 3:6)
"Good for food" = Lust
"Pleasant to the eyes" = Pride
"A desire to make one wise" = Adultery

Jesus (Matt 4:1-11)
Stones to Bread - Tempted by lust
Testing God - Tempted by pride
Worship Satan - Tempted by adultery

Jesus (Lk 4:1-13)
Pride and adultery are switched in this account because one of the things that it expresses (I believe) is that man can also go from Lust to Adultery to Pride. Romans 1:24, "Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:"
