'Get Over Yourself'

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Luke 11:37-54

The word 'hypocrite' comes from an old Greek word that means 'to wear a mask.' In Ancient Greece, actors often wore masks according to the characters they played.

Hypocrisy

What does a hypocrite look like?

  • They majored on the outside, but minored on the inside. (v. 42)

  • They were preoccupied with being noticed. (v. 43)

  • They make men worse rather than better. (vs. 44-45)

  • Their teaching produces a burden, not a blessing. (v. 46)

  • Their work is a monument to their guilt. (vs. 47-48)

  • They make the truth harder to find. (v. 52)

Authenticity

What does real Christianity look like?

  • It allows us to deal with our doubts. (Mark 9:17-24)

  • It means not having to pretend.

  • It means finding healing in the Body of Christ.

James 5:16 - 'Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.'

I John 1:7 - '... but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.'

  • It provides a caring place for others and trusing God with the results.
