The Transfiguration

The account (Theophany) is contained in each of the first three gospels and emphasises the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. His metamorphosis was accompanied by the Old Testament representatives of the Law and the Prophets; Moses and Elijah. Jesus had taken three friends Peter, James and John; with Him up a high unnamed mountain. Luke records that; Jesus was praying while His three companions were sleeping, but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.
The transfiguration in front of their surprised eyes, Jesus' radiant garments; whiter than any earthly launderer could initiate, Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah; was frightening. The terrified response by Peter for Jesus to permit the permanence of three tabernacles was answered from the cloud of glory by the voice of God; This is My Beloved Son, listen to Him. This amazing event revealed the glory and majesty of Christ from within Himself; ie. who He is as God.

The seventeenth-century Puritan preacher, Thomas Watson, wrote; "God's glory is such an essential part of His being, that He cannot be God without it." For us, the Westminster Shorter Catechism expresses the succinct answer for our human unsteadiness: "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever."
