The Parable of the Fig Tree

Although all the parables must be interpreted in relation to their context, this is especially the case with the parable of the fig tree. The entire parable has the single purpose of reinforcing what Jesus had been declaring in the so-called “Olivet Discourse.” Apart from that setting the parable would make no sense whatsoever. Therefore, it will be most beneficial to remind ourselves of the prior discussion.

\The scene begins with Jesus making a rather remarkable statement to His close followers (vv. 1-2). As they were admiring the great buildings on the temple compound and thus focusing on the physical reality, as well as the immediate and the temporal, Jesus made a startling prediction. He told them in no uncertain terms that everything they were looking at was going to crumble into ruins. In fact, there would be a complete destruction!

Upon their departure from the compound and while viewing the scene from the nearby Mount of Olives, Peter, James and John (see Mark 13:3) asked Him privately as to the timing of this disaster. “When will all of this take place?” they inquire. “And what will be the sign of His coming again at the end of the age?” (v. 3).
