A testimony of trust

198 ( 93 | 105 )

We are surrounded by human threats and promises. Men seem to have such power. It is tempting to fear men or seek their favour, to look for good at the hands of creatures. This is true for our souls and bodies in time and for eternity, as well as for the progress of the kingdom.

Psalm 118:8-9 puts before us the issue of trust or confidence: where will we take refuge? From whom shall we expect good?

It puts before us a question: God or man? We can consider this in terms of the goodness, mercy, knowledge, wisdom, power, faithfulness and eternity of God and men, and make a comparison between God himself and even the best of men.

It presents a conclusion: "It is better to trust in the Lord." He alone is worthy of our trust and confidence; he alone provides good. We do not despise other helps, and believe that God works by means, but if God is not for us among those who help us then we are lost. Cursed is the man who trusts in men; blessed the man who trusts in the Lord.
