The Pilgrim's Persecution and Imprecation (10th Song of Ascents)

51

Psalm 129 is the 10th of the 15 Songs of Ascents (Pilgrim Psalms) and it takes the Songs' frequent references to persecution and brings it into focus. The first half of Psalm 129 describes the persecution of the pilgrim in this world while the second half is an imprecatory prayer in response. The center of Psalm, however, is the high point, as it praises the righteous Lord who was persecuted in our place for our redemption and protection.

Psalm 129, rightly understood, should increase our strength and patience in the midst of persecution, our love and devotion for our Protector, and our confidence and zeal to pray for justice as a result.
