Profane Preaching - The Christian & Cursing

There seems to be a very disturbing trend in at least one segment of Evangelical Christianity these days... it is the unholy habit of using profanity while preaching. This appears to be the latest pathetic attempt by those constantly advocating that we need to be more 'Culturally Relevant'.

What may be even more disturbing about this most recent trend, however, is the fact that many good and godly men, who may never actually participate in this profane practice, have not only been slow and strangely silent about condemning this unholy habit, but have even embraced some of those doing it and promoted their ministries?

In a recent article that deals with utter absurdity of using vulgarity as a ministry tool, Dr. John MacArthur identifies Pastor Mark Driscoll (known by his admirers as “The Cursing Pastor”) as one of the movement's most well known advocates. MacArthur states: “both his vocabulary and his subject matter (are) at times as tasteless, indecent, crude, and utterly inappropriate for a minister of Christ”.

In his conclusion, MacArthur asks the question; “I frankly wonder how any Christian who takes the Bible at face value could ever think that in order to be “culturally relevant” Christians should participate in society's growing infatuation with vulgarity. Didn't vulgarity and culture used to be considered polar opposites?”
