"Apostasy and Arrest"

Ma. 14:43-52

The Capture (vv.43-46)

21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.' (Matt. 7:21-23).

4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus[b] said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 So he asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go." (Jo. 18:4-8).

The Complaint (vv. 47-49)

10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" (Jo. 18:10-11).

He was despised and rejected by men, By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and was numbered with the transgressors; (Isa.53:3a, 8a, 12c).

The Cowardice (vv. 50-52)

52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by
