Why do we have this prophecy?

Ahaz was a terrible king. He refused to follow God, refused to have any faith in Him and always looked in all the wrong places for help instead of the only reliable source. The prophecy we love so much today is rooted in a bad time. It was as much a sentence against the king as it was a promise to the people that God is still on His throne.
