The Man of God and the Word of God

Transcript of the segment on moral tragedy of our generation:

Now there is and has been for quite a while increasing evidence that the very concern I’ve just raised is increasingly urgent among Bible-believing Christians, supposedly Bible-believing Christians, supposedly evangelical Christians, not sure what those words mean in the popular culture anymore.

Because of this Bible preaching is down. I’ve often said if you look at the tragedy, the moral tragedy of our generation the spiritual collapse of our generation, the institution that has most failed America is not the ACLU, it is not the Supreme Court, it’s the evangelical church that will not preach the word of God. Why? Because they want success. The ABC’s of church success, Attendance, Buildings, and Cash. They are all good and I want all of them. But I want them as byproducts. And you can get them all in illegitimate ways and we have failed our generation by refusing to teach the Scriptures and to allow the power of God.

I remember Dr. Boice saying, “Rick, what we save them with we save them to… If we save them with something other than the word of God, we save them to someone other than the God of the word”. We must believe in the sufficiency and the power [of the word]. You know it’s hard to make the case with me, because I am a son of this Church. And many times people have said to me: “Rick, you’re not just going to preach the Word are you?” And that’s kind of how it comes across. “Oh, you’re just going to just preach the word?” You know you're just wasting your time on me...
