Our Garments of Salvation

A famous country song tells the story of a little girl whose poor mother sewed her a coat made of different colored rags. The girl was so proud of her coat, but her school mates laughed at her. She tried to explain to them that her mother had sewed her love in every stitch, but they didn't understand the garment's value to the little girl.

This brings to mind a flood of thoughts about God's love in clothing His people in the righteousness of the Savior!

We are an unclean thing, and all our so-called righteousnesses are but filthy garments before a holy God.

But Isaiah describes what great joy God's people have to discover that He has clothed us in the garments of salvation and robes of righteousness!

The prophet Zechariah describes a scene in glory when the Lord takes away our filthy garments, and says to us, "I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with a change of raiment."

How supremely valuable are the garments that Christ gives to us, and how great the doom to anyone found without them!

One reason God gives us such beautiful garments is so that we will be clothed like His Son, all perfect and without spot or stain. We will not be vile or lowly or out of place in the royal family, but as was done unto the prodigal son, He has put upon us the best robe!

In the Revelation, we are told that it is, in fact, the blood of the Lamb that renders these garments perfect and clean upon the saints. At the wedding feast, Christ's bride the Church is arrayed in robes of His righteousness.

When our Lord Jesus was, as it were, sewing these garments for us at Calvary, He was sewing them with love in every stitch for His people.
