J. Gresham Machen in 1921 wrote, "The consciousness of sin was formerly the starting-point of all preaching: but today it is gone." What would he think of preaching in America in the 21st century? The Heidelberg Catechsim states that to live and die in the comfort afforded us in Christ we must know something of how great are our sin and misery. It is through the law that we come to know sin. This sermon draws from Romans 7 on the proper view and use of the law.
